Herbstein, "The highest medicinal spring in Hesse" (calcium-sodium-sulphate thermal spring, 32.6 °C), a climatic resort and medical spring treatment centre in the Hoher Vogelsberg national park, is situated on a basalt cone (450 m above sea level). It has an historic old town with beautiful half-timbered houses built in a ring around the town church, which dates from the 14th century, and a well-preserved circular wall, dating from the 13th century, with peel towers and vault.
