An extraordinary mild microclimate, enhanced by the protecting high mountains of the Taunus, this Rheingau resembles a little "Burgundy on the Rhine,” especially as the southern slopes of the Taunus stretch down to the majestic river and merge into one of the most beautiful areas for growing wine in Europe: the Rhinegau.
Here, where the name giving river reaches a width of nearly one kilometer, many nobles and clergymen have settled down for thousands of years and helped to establish one of the most important arrays of historic buildings in Germany, among them the world famous former Cistercian Abbey of Eberbach, the Abbey of Eibingen as well as the manor houses Johannisberg and Vollrads.
